‘Little Slice Of Normal' Dining Experience: Portuguese Fado House
Anyone willing to be out late and stroll the back streets of the ancient rustic neighborhoods of Lisbon, Portugal, can experience a classic fado music and culinary experience. I was lucky enough to travel to Portugal last year on a Fado music tour and did, in fact, stroll those back streets late at night. It was beyond amazing.
‘Fado’ (meaning ‘fate’) is Portuguese blues/folk music-- mournfully beautiful and haunting ballads about lost sailors, broken hearts, and bittersweet romance. Fado houses are places where you can sample traditional Portuguese cuisine and wines with interludes of vocal performances by ‘fadista’ (fado singer) accompanied by the Portuguese guitarra, a pear-shaped guitar unique to Portugal.
Tonight, we’ll visit the Alfama and Bairro Alto districts of Lisbon, home to some of the best fado houses in Lisbon as we dine on authentic Portuguese dishes and listen to Kansas City’s own amazing fado musicians - Beau Bledsoe and Michael McClintock who will be joined by fadista Bruno Bessa. We’ve also invited an internationally renowned fadista Rodrigo Costa Felix to join us virtually from Lisbon! What a treat.
It wouldn’t be a Portuguese experience without the wines produced in this magical land: the Vinho Verdes and the Vinho Tintos, as well as the unctuous port wines produced along the Duoro River.
Join us as we explore the seafood, sausages, spices and pastries of Portuguese cuisine as well as its amazing wines, both of which still remain a mystery to most food and wine lovers outside its borders. Our meal will include classic Portuguese fare such as Shrimp with Chorizo, Baby Clams & White Beans. Smoked Paprika Escabeche, the famous Pastiés de Nata, and more. Come hungry for both exceptional chef-prepared dishes and surprising wines but also for an amazing evening of live musical performance!
Your first Portuguese word to learn for this class is “Obrigados!” which means “thank you” … and it's exactly what you’ll be telling our Chefs at the end of this incredible evening.
Registration will be limited so that we can ensure appropriate distancing… so register soon!
