Hands On | Tasting & Take-Home Quart of Sauerkraut

Class Description: 

Fermenting is all the rage these days, and, tonight, you'll learn all about this interesting culinary phenomenon that’s been an important part of traditional diets in Asia and Europe for millennia.   In the U.S. people are realizing how the “magic” of eating fermented foods can help them you feel great and keep your digestive system in tip-top shape. You'll discover first-hand about quality ingredients and how to use them to make the best “good-for-you” fermented foods.  

You'll start by learning the process of making your own Sauerkraut (a superstar of fermented foods), Kombucha (a fermented, sweetened black tea commonly consumed for its probiotic health benefits. Juice, spices, fruit or other flavorings are often added), and yogurt, which unlike sauerkraut and kombucha that ferment with wild bacteria, is formed with “defined” cultures of bacteria, but still considered helpful for good gut nutrition.  You’ll be surprised just how easy fermenting is! 

Along the way, we'll cover some basics of microbiology that applies to fermenting (but don’t worry Jennifer knows how to make this discussion user-friendly).  She’ll cover all the fermentation basics that will surely inspire you to include fermented foods with all your meals.  Of course, there will be tastings.  Trust us, this is a class that won’t just open your mind about your health, it will change the way you look at the foods you serve as everyday meals for optimum health and flavor.  Plus, you’ll create your own quart of sauerkraut to finish fermenting at home, in addition to the recipes and confidence to recreate the delicious gems you’ve learned tonight.
